Pacific Rim International School offers a comprehensive educational program rooted in the Montessori philosophy for early childhood and the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework for middle and high school students. The curriculum emphasizes holistic development, inquiry-based learning, and global citizenship, preparing students for a interconnected world.

  • Early Childhood Program (Ages 18 months to 6 years): This Montessori-inspired program focuses on fostering independence, curiosity, and practical life skills. Children engage in hands-on activities that develop fine and gross motor skills, language acquisition, mathematics foundations, cultural studies, and sensorial exploration. Classrooms are designed as prepared environments with mixed-age groupings to encourage peer learning and mentorship. Key courses include practical life exercises like pouring and buttoning, language arts through phonetic reading, introductory math with concrete materials, and geography via continent puzzles and cultural artifacts. The program integrates art, music, and movement to nurture creativity and physical coordination, ensuring a joyful and self-directed learning experience that builds confidence and social-emotional growth.

For elementary students (ages 6 to 12), the curriculum transitions into the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), which is transdisciplinary and concept-driven. Students explore six transdisciplinary themes such as 'Who We Are' and 'How the World Works,' integrating subjects like language, mathematics, science, social studies, arts, and physical education. Inquiry units encourage critical thinking and research skills, with a strong emphasis on second language acquisition in Japanese or Spanish. Mathematics covers number operations, geometry, and data handling through manipulative and problem-solving approaches. Science involves hands-on experiments in life, earth, and physical sciences, while social studies delves into history, economics, and environmental awareness. Arts education includes visual arts, music, and drama, promoting expression and cultural appreciation. Physical education focuses on teamwork, fitness, and global games.

  • Middle Years Programme (MYP, Ages 11 to 16): This IB program builds on PYP foundations with a rigorous, interdisciplinary approach. Core subjects include English language and literature, which analyze texts from diverse cultures; mathematics advancing to algebra, geometry, and statistics; sciences encompassing biology, chemistry, and physics through labs and projects; individuals and societies covering history, geography, and economics; and arts with options in visual arts, music, or theatre. Language acquisition continues with Japanese or Spanish, emphasizing communication and cultural immersion. Design technology introduces digital literacy, robotics, and sustainable engineering. Physical and health education promotes wellness and sportsmanship. The MYP personal project allows students to pursue independent passions, culminating in a major work that demonstrates research and reflection skills.

The Diploma Programme (DP, Ages 16 to 18) prepares students for university with a challenging pre-university curriculum. Students select six subjects from groups including studies in language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, and the arts. Standard and higher level options allow depth in areas like English, History, Biology, Chemistry, Math Analysis, and Visual Arts. The DP core comprises the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course, which critically examines knowledge production; the Extended Essay, an independent 4,000-word research paper; and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), requiring extracurricular involvement in creative pursuits, physical endeavors, and community service. Second language options include Japanese, Spanish, or French ab initio. The program fosters international-mindedness, ethical reasoning, and academic rigor, with electives in subjects like Psychology, Environmental Systems, or Film Studies. Overall, the school's courses integrate technology, sustainability, and global perspectives, ensuring graduates are resilient, empathetic leaders equipped for higher education and beyond. This cohesive progression from Montessori to IB creates a seamless educational journey spanning over 300 words in descriptive detail.
