QUT's Faculty of Business and Law is hiring a management accountant on a $122,852 to $134,385 package including 17% super. Here's what the role involves and how to apply.

Queensland University of Technology is hiring a management accountant for its Faculty of Business and Law, an ongoing full-time role based at the Gardens Point campus in the Brisbane CBD with hybrid work written into the advertisement. The package runs from $122,852 to $134,385 a year at Higher Education Worker Level 7, or HEW7: a salary of $103,811 to $113,557, plus 17 per cent employer superannuation and 17.5 per cent recreation leave loading. Applications close 22 November 2026 at 11:30pm Brisbane time.
The number is the easy part to quote. The more consequential detail is what the seat actually does, because a management accountant inside a university faculty is closer to a business partner than a ledger keeper.
What a management accountant at QUT actually does
Management accounting is the internal mirror of financial accounting. Financial accountants report outward to auditors, regulators and funding bodies; management accountants look inward at faculty performance, research project margins, salary cost per student and capital spending. QUT's position description says it plainly: provide financial management advice and services to the Faculty, support business and service delivery objectives, and deliver analysis that informs periodic financial planning, budgeting, costing, forecasting, monitoring and reporting.
The work splits into a few recurring routines:
- Budgeting and forecasting, building the faculty's annual budget and re-forecasting as enrolments, grant wins and staffing shift through the year.
- Monthly management reporting, turning general ledger data into something a dean or a school manager can actually act on.
- Business partnering, sitting with academic and professional leaders to explain why a research centre's salary costs are running ahead of grant revenue and what to do about the next quarter.
- Process improvement, tidying reports and models so the next month-end is faster than the last.
The same title can mean different work depending on the portfolio. Supporting a health program, for instance, might mean explaining why simulation labs cost more per student than lecture-based courses and what that does to the faculty's bottom line. A faculty budget is not one line item either. It can carry a dozen or more restricted funding streams: Commonwealth Grant Scheme amounts, domestic and international student fees, research block grants and philanthropic gifts with conditions attached. Translating those into one coherent forecast is the kind of problem this role is paid to hold together.
How the HEW7 package compares with the Brisbane market
Start with the base rate before the exception. What Brisbane pays management accountants depends on the source: roughly $108,000 on Indeed, about $115,000 across recent SEEK-sourced listings on Jora, and a $125,000 median in Pay Lens's snapshot of the past 30 days. Robert Half's national salary guide puts the middle of the market near $111,000, with the 25th and 75th percentiles at $100,000 and $120,000.
QUT's salary band of $103,811 to $113,557 sits inside that spread rather than above it. What changes the arithmetic is superannuation. QUT pays 17 per cent employer super, well clear of the 12 per cent superannuation guarantee that has applied since July 2025, and it adds 17.5 per cent leave loading. That is why the total advertised package reaches $122,852 to $134,385.
One caution on benchmarking. Most private-sector listings quote base salary without super, while QUT quotes a total package that includes it. When a recruiter says management accountants in Brisbane earn $105,000 to $115,000, that's usually base. Do the addition yourself before you decide whether the university is paying under or over market. Management accounting is also rarely an entry point: the usual route runs from general accounting into budgeting and analysis work, so the floor of the band assumes a qualification and a few years behind you.
The shortage numbers behind the advertisement
Here's the base rate. Jobs and Skills Australia's 2025 Occupation Shortage List assessed management accountants as no shortage, nationally and in every state and territory. That's the official snapshot, and it matters before the anecdotes begin.
The exception sits in the member data. Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) surveyed 395 members who advertised vacancies across 2024 and found management accountant roles had a 45 per cent fill rate, well under the 67 per cent threshold the methodology treats as a likely shortage. In regional Queensland, Tasmania and the Northern Territory, the fill rate dropped to 29 per cent, and 40 per cent of respondents reported higher or much higher demand than the year before.
The pipeline is the second pressure. CPA Australia has told a parliamentary committee the country needs a net increase of roughly 4,000 accountants and auditors each year over the next decade, while domestic accounting graduates fall far short of that figure. Management accountant also sits on Australia's Core Skills Occupation List, which keeps skilled migration pathways open for the occupation even where the formal shortage finding is absent.
What this means for your application
A management accountant I know, call her Mei, spent her first fortnight at a Queensland university rebuilding the budget workbook her predecessor had taken with them on the way out. Multiply her by every finance team in the sector. The skills in this advertisement aren't decoration; they're the difference between walking into a role and walking into a reconstruction.
Read the selection criteria before you read the about us boilerplate. QUT wants a relevant degree or equivalent experience, and membership with CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, or an equivalent body, either held or in progress. It wants evidence of developing, reviewing and analysing large budgets across corporate financial systems, and it names Oracle as a platform you should be able to work in, alongside Microsoft Office and databases.
What tends to separate shortlisted candidates is less exotic than it sounds:
- Name the systems you've actually touched, whether Oracle, SAP, TechnologyOne, Power BI or Excel modelling, and show you can turn them into a usable number quickly.
- Give one concrete example of business partnering, where you explained a budget or variance to a non-finance manager and it changed a decision.
- State your professional membership status unambiguously: qualified, part-qualified, or sitting the next module, with the body named.
- Answer the equity and Indigenous Australian engagement criterion directly, since it is a stated requirement rather than an optional flourish.
Eligibility is firm: you need ongoing full-time work rights in Australia. QUT states that Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islander people are encouraged to apply, in line with its strategic priority on Indigenous Australian success.
Apply through QUT's recruitment portal before 22 November 2026 at 11:30pm Brisbane time. The role is also listed on AcademicJobs with the package, location and application link in one place if you want to compare it against other university finance jobs before committing a weekend to the application.
What the employer brings to the table
QUT is one of Australia's larger universities, with around 50,000 students across two inner-Brisbane campuses. Gardens Point sits at 2 George Street, wedged between the Brisbane River and the City Botanic Gardens and described by the university itself as the only major campus in the Brisbane CBD. That's where the Faculty of Business and Law operates, and the QUT Business School holds what the sector calls the triple crown: accreditation from AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA, a combination only a small number of business schools worldwide hold.
The advertised conditions beyond pay are worth reading in full. Up to 17 per cent superannuation, 17.5 per cent leave loading, up to 26 weeks of primary carer parental leave, Fitness Passport access, discounted private health insurance, and salary packaging for extra super, vehicle leasing and on-campus services such as childcare and parking. Hybrid work is part of the advertisement, not a favour negotiated later.
The trade-off is the one common to large institutions: process. University finance runs through approval queues that protect fairness while slowing decisions, and staff reviews tend to describe structured development and flexibility alongside administrative layers. For an accountant who values a legible path over a fast one, that's usually an acceptable bargain.
QUT's careers page carries the full position description, the HEW7 classification and the advertised conditions.
One concrete next step: open the position description now, write down the closing time of 11:30pm Brisbane time on 22 November 2026, and draft your cover letter in four sections mapped to the criteria: systems, business partnering, professional membership and your answer to the equity criterion. Don't leave it to the final evening; QUT's portal asks for more than a resume and a smile.
