My cat sat on the counter the whole time, eyes glowing faintly, clearly amused at the human fumbling around. The truth from feline research is more nuanced than the old wives' tale. The work shows how feline adaptations continue to inspire technology long after the basic biology was mapped.
Another line of inquiry examines how cats combine vision with other senses. Whiskers and hearing fill gaps when light drops below even their threshold, which explains why a cat can still navigate a pitch-black room after its eyes have done all they can.
Practical notes for living with cats
Most house cats are crepuscular rather than strictly nocturnal. They hunt and play most actively at dawn and dusk, when their vision works best. Keeping a consistent low-level night light in hallways can reduce startling encounters, though many cats manage fine without it.
