Neil deGrasse Tyson has become the most recognizable living scientist in the United States without ever winning a Nobel Prize or making a headline-grabbing discovery. His achievement is different: he has made a large slice of the public feel that the universe belongs to them. When he explains black holes, dark matter, or the expanding cosmos, people lean in instead of tuning out. That is not a minor skill. It is a cultural force.
