Job Summary:
Holy Apostles College and Seminary based in Cromwell, is seeking a mission-driven, detail-oriented, and experienced Controller to maintain and strengthen our company's internal controls. accuracy, quality, and timeliness of all financial transactions and reporting. The role supports the institution's financial well-being by providing senior management with strategic financial guidance, contributing to key financial decisions, and overseeing all accounting processes. The Controller is also expected to provide sound financial advice, identify opportunities to improve efficiency, and implement measures that produce meaningful cost savings. This position requires regular interaction with government agencies, including the Department of Education. Previous experience working with public institutions is therefore highly valued. Principal Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily Business Office operations, including accounting, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, and general ledger activity.
- Supervise Business Office staff and provide administrative oversight of assigned operational areas, as needed.
- Prepare and review accurate monthly, quarterly, annual, and ad hoc financial reports.
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes.
- Develop, monitor, and forecast budgets under the direction of the CFO.
- Work with department leaders to create and manage department-level budgets and cost centers.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting procedures, and financial policies.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, institutional policies, and applicable federal, state, and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate audit preparation and serve as a liaison with external auditors.
- Support financial reporting and documentation for accrediting bodies, government agencies, and regulatory organizations, including the Department of Education.
- Lead or support improvements and integrations involving QuickBooks, Populi, and related systems.
- Develop dashboards and key performance indicators to support financial oversight.
- Support payroll, benefits administration, onboarding documentation, and related compliance processes.
- Provide financial analysis and recommendations related to cost control, operational efficiency, and institutional sustainability.
- All other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- At least 5-10 years of progressive accounting, finance, or business office experience.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, budgeting, payroll, financial reporting, internal controls, and audit preparation.
- Experience supervising employees or managing business office functions.
- Proficiency with QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
Preferred
- CPA, CMA, MBA, cost accounting or master's degree in a related field.
- Experience in higher education, nonprofit, religious, public-sector, or mission-driven institutions.
- Experience with Populi or similar administrative/accounting systems.
- Familiarity with NECHE, IPEDS, ATS, Department of Education, or similar reporting requirements.
- Experience with benefits administration, payroll compliance, and HR-related documentation.
