Higher Education Employer Ranking

Methodology & Weighting

A dynamic, rolling-average system that reflects the real-time health of academic workplaces. No once-a-year snapshots — just living, transparent data powered by verified employee voices.

How the Rankings Are Calculated

Unlike static annual lists, our Higher Education Employer Rankings are organic and always current. The moment a new verified review is submitted or an old one expires, every university’s score updates instantly.

1. The Scoring Formula

The Overall Employer Ranking is calculated as the arithmetic mean of the 10 core metrics. Each metric is rated on a scale of 1–10 by verified current employees.

Overall Score = (Metric₁ + Metric₂ + … + Metric₁₀) / 10

For institutions with fewer than 50 reviews we apply Bayesian weighting to ensure the ranking remains statistically significant and stable as the data pool grows.

2. The 12-Month Decay (Recency Bias)

Active Phase

For 365 days your rating contributes 100% to the institutional average.

Expiration

On day 366 the rating is archived and removed from the live ranking (but kept in historical trend reports).

Update Anytime

Edit your rating before it expires and the 12-month clock resets automatically.

3. Qualitative Sentiment Integration

Numbers tell only half the story. Our AI-driven Natural Language Processing engine analyzes optional comments to identify trending keywords and themes. These appear as word clouds and contextual insights on every university profile.

How Universities Can Improve Their Rank

The best way to improve a ranking is not through a single campaign, but through sustained engagement and genuine cultural improvement. Because scores expire every 12 months, institutions that consistently provide a great experience and encourage regular honest feedback will naturally rise to the top of the organic leaderboard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about the Higher Education Employer Ranking Methodology

What is the scoring formula?

The Overall Employer Ranking is the simple average of the 10 core metrics (each rated 1–10). For institutions with fewer than 50 reviews we apply Bayesian weighting to ensure statistical stability and prevent outliers from distorting the score.

How does the 12-month decay work?

Every rating is active for exactly 365 days. On day 366 it is automatically removed from the live calculation. Employees can update their rating at any time to reset the 12-month clock and keep their feedback current.

What is Qualitative Sentiment Integration?

Our AI-powered NLP engine scans optional comments for trending keywords and themes (e.g. “collaborative research”, “administrative burden”). These insights appear as word clouds and context on each university profile.

How do you ensure data integrity and trust?

Three-tier verification: domain-locked institutional email, one-voice-one-vote rule, and real-time anomaly detection for review bombing or coaching. All violations are manually reviewed by the Integrity Team.

How can a university improve its ranking?

The best way is sustained cultural improvement and regular, high-volume honest feedback. Because ratings expire every 12 months, institutions that consistently deliver great experiences naturally rise in the organic, real-time leaderboard.

Is the methodology transparent and fair?

Yes. The entire system — formula, decay rules, weighting, and verification process — is fully documented here. No black-box algorithms. Every university and reviewer knows exactly how rankings are calculated.
