Shaping the Future of Academic Workplaces

The Higher Education Employer Ranking is more than just a list; it is a living ecosystem of feedback. Built specifically for the unique environment of colleges and universities, these rankings provide a 360-degree view of what it’s actually like to work at an institution.

How it Works

Our ranking system is built on four core pillars to ensure integrity and relevance:

  • Verification: Only current employees with a valid institutional email address can participate.
  • Recency: To keep data fresh, rankings expire and are removed from the calculation after 12 months unless updated.
  • Flexibility: Employees can visit their AcademicJobs portal at any time to adjust their ratings as their experience evolves.
  • Organic Growth: The "Overall Employer Ranking" is a weighted average of 10 key metrics, updated in real-time with every new entry.

The 10 Core Metrics

Employees rate their institution on a sliding scale of 1 (Poor) to 10 (Excellent) across these critical areas:

MetricDescription
Overall Job SatisfactionGeneral happiness with your role and the institution.
Work-Life BalanceSupport for personal time and manageable workloads.
Career GrowthAvailability of promotion paths and professional development.
Management & LeadershipEffectiveness of deans, chairs, and executive leadership.
Compensation & BenefitsSatisfaction with salary, health plans, and retirement.
Culture & ValuesAlignment between the institution's mission and your own.
DEICommitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the workplace.
Team CollaborationThe quality of communication within your specific department.
Innovation & CreativityEncouragement to pursue new ideas and research.
Likelihood to RecommendYour "Employer Net Promoter Score" (eNPS).

Optional Feedback: Every rating includes a space for comments, allowing you to provide context and suggest specific areas for institutional improvement.

Rules and Community Guidelines

To maintain a fair and professional environment, all participants must adhere to the following:

For Employees

  • Email Verification: You must use your @university.edu (or equivalent) email to verify your status. Your identity remains anonymous to your employer.
  • Authenticity: Reviews must be based on actual, current work experience.
  • Professionalism: While we encourage honesty, comments containing hate speech, defamation, or proprietary internal data will be removed.

For Employers

  • Encouraged Participation: We encourage universities to invite their staff to participate to ensure a statistically significant sample size.
  • The "Anti-Coaching" Rule: Employers must not influence, script, or "coach" employees on how to vote. This includes offering incentives for positive reviews or monitoring employees while they vote.
  • Penalty for Breach: Any institution found in breach of the coaching rule will face a Ranking Penalty, which includes a visible "Data Integrity Warning" on their profile and a percentage deduction from their overall score for 6 months.
