QUT has posted a fixed-term role for an Industry Research Senior Officer in its Office of Research Services. The position runs for one year at the Kelvin Grove campus with hybrid flexibility and carries a total remuneration package between $122,852 and $134,385 including superannuation and leave loading.
The work sits inside the Industry Research pillar, which handles commercial research contracts, consultancies and tenders. Staff in this area translate external funding rules into clear advice for academics while keeping internal systems up to date.
Australian higher education organisations spent $16.4 billion on research and development in 2024. Industry-funded work forms only a small slice of that total. Universities currently receive around three percent of the R&D expenditure reported by Australian companies, leaving most industry dollars outside university ledgers.
One research team I know had a straightforward consultancy lined up with a local manufacturer. The contract sat unsigned for six weeks while the principal investigator and the company’s legal team traded versions of the same IP clause. By the time signatures arrived the project timeline had slipped and two technicians had been reassigned. The delay was not dramatic, but it was entirely avoidable with earlier, clearer guidance on standard terms.
Roles like the one now advertised exist to reduce exactly those friction points. The successful applicant will review funding agreements, advise on policy, and help refine the processes that sit between an idea and a signed contract.
Selection criteria emphasise a degree plus relevant experience, preferably inside a university setting. Candidates need solid knowledge of the external research funding landscape, strong written and verbal communication, and the ability to work across teams with a customer focus. Digital literacy with research administration systems is listed, along with a demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and Indigenous Australian engagement.
The role is open to current QUT staff who hold unrestricted work rights in Australia. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants who are not current staff are also encouraged to apply under the university’s Indigenous employment strategy.
What this means for research support teams is straightforward. A single officer who knows the standard clauses, the common sticking points and the quickest route through internal approvals can free academics to spend more time on the actual research. The base rate across the sector is still long turnaround times on industry agreements; the exception appears where dedicated staff maintain living templates and maintain regular contact with both academics and external partners.
Applications close on 5 August 2026. The position description is available on the QUT recruitment site and outlines day-to-day responsibilities in more detail.
Anyone considering the role should review the full selection criteria against their own experience with contract administration or research funding rules. A concrete next step is to download the position description, map two or three recent examples from your own work against the listed capabilities, and prepare a short statement that shows how those examples meet the criteria.
