Dr Mamatha Nagaraj is an Associate Professor and University Academic Fellow in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leeds. She earned her PhD from Trinity College Dublin. Before joining the University of Leeds, she held the position of Brunel Research Fellow of the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 at the University of Manchester.
Her research centres on experimental physics underpinning soft materials and devices. Key areas include liquid crystals for augmented and virtual reality applications, digital optics and beam steering, surface modification of polymers using liquid crystals as imprinting media, fabrication of novel colloidal particles and soft matter topology, aggregation induced emission in polymers and liquid crystals, liquid crystals of novel architectures and exotic mesophases, metamaterials and metasurfaces, and self-assembly in block copolymers. She specialises in techniques such as optical, fluorescent, atomic force and electron microscopies, super-resolution optical microscopy, X-ray scattering, dielectric, FTIR, Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopies, calorimetry, and direct write lithography. Dr Nagaraj is a member of the Institute of Physics, the British Liquid Crystals Society and the International Liquid Crystals Society. She coordinates the module PHYS5016M – Soft Matter Physics: Liquid Crystals and serves as the BSc and MPhys study abroad co-ordinator for the School of Physics and Astronomy. She welcomes enquiries for PhD study in her areas of expertise.
