Abbie Strunc, Ph.D., is Professor of Education and Associate Dean for Academic Administration and Enrollment in the College of Education at Sam Houston State University. She is a faculty member in the Department of Teaching and Learning. Dr. Strunc earned her Ph.D. in Curriculum Studies from the University of North Texas in 2014, M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from Texas A&M University in 2005, and B.S.A. in History from Texas A&M University in 2003. Her professional career began as a Social Studies Teacher at Duncanville High School in Duncanville Independent School District from 2004 to 2015. She then joined Texas A&M University-Texarkana as Assistant Professor of Education in August 2015. At Sam Houston State University, she advanced to Department Chair of the School of Teaching and Learning and later to her current associate dean position.
Dr. Strunc's research specializations encompass citizenship and democratic education, teacher efficacy, discourse analysis, early career teacher mentoring, and equity in the curriculum. Selected key publications include "The Politics of Culture: A Discourse Analysis of the Texas Social Studies Curriculum" (Journal of Culture and Values in Education, 2019), "Politics in the Citizenship Curriculum: A Critical Discourse Analysis of the Texas Government Standards" (co-authored with K. King, Critical Approaches to Discourse Analysis Across Disciplines, 2017), "Understanding the Relationship between Gender and Self-Efficacy in Northeast Texas Public Schools" (co-authored with K. Murray, Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice, 2019), "Building Leaders Abroad: Increasing Educational Leadership Efficacy through Short Term Study Abroad" (co-authored with K. L. Coke and D. P. Price, International Journal of Educational Leadership and Management, 2023), and "A Strategic Exploration of Bilingual Education Policy" (co-authored with H. Berg and A. J. Godwin, School Leadership Review, 2023). She is a 2021 recipient of the Texas A&M University System Chancellor’s Academy of Teacher Educators. Dr. Strunc serves as President of the Texas Association of Teacher Educators, Managing Editor of the Texas Educational Professionals journal, Chair-Elect of the Council of State Officers of Teacher Education, and legislative advocate for Texas CASA: Court Appointed Special Advocates. Her contributions influence teacher preparation, curriculum analysis, and educational leadership.
