Abdallah Shami is Professor and Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at Western University, as well as Western Research Chair since 2026. He earned his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees from the City University of New York in 2003 and 2001, respectively, and his B.E.Sc. from the Lebanese University in 1997. A licensed Professional Engineer, Shami joined Western University in 2004 and founded the Optimized Computing and Communications (OC2) Laboratory, which he directs. The lab enjoys international recognition for its work, maintaining collaborations with IBM, Ericsson, and the National Research Council Canada, and has trained over 80 researchers. Shami's career includes leadership in technology transfer to industry and supervision of engineering programs.
His research interests encompass Smart Systems, Next-Generation Networks, Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence, Industrial Internet of Things, Network Softwarization, and Network Security, focusing on applications in autonomous vehicles, network security, smart cities/communities, and 5G/6G infrastructure. Shami is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Canadian Academy of Engineering, Engineering Institute of Canada, Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association, and Western Academy for Advanced Research. Key honors include the IEEE ComSoc North American Regional Exceptional Service Award (2025), R.H. Tanner Industry Leadership Award (2023), IEEE Communications Society Technical Achievement Awards (2023 and 2017), B. Broughton Canada Merit Medal (2022), multiple best paper awards at conferences such as ACM CCS 2024, IEEE IEMCON 2020, and IEEE VTC Spring 2015, Premier Academic Partner Research Award (2017), and Samsung Global Research Award (2013). He serves as Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management (2026-), Editor of IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security (2023-2025) and IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials (2012-), and has held numerous associate editor positions. Shami contributes to committees like NSERC/FRQNT Multidisciplinary Evaluation Committee, IEEE Region 7 Executive Committee, and technical program committees for major conferences, and has delivered keynote talks on ML-powered UAV monitoring and zero-touch network security.
