About Abu

Associate Professor Abu Siddique serves as Senior Honorary Research Fellow in Economics at the UWA Business School, University of Western Australia. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours), Master of Arts, and Master of Philosophy in Economics from the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh, a Diploma in Research Methods from the University of Dhaka, a Diploma in Research in Rural Development from the University of Hawaii, and a PhD from the University of Western Australia.

His career includes early roles at Rajshahi University, Bangladesh, as Research Fellow (1974-1975), Lecturer (1978-1979), and Assistant Professor (1979-1981). At UWA, he began as Tutor at St. Thomas More College (1987-1988), progressed to Senior Tutor and Lecturer-in-Charge (1987-1989), Lecturer (1989-2000), Director of the Trade, Migration and Development Research Centre (1995-2010), Head of the Economics Programme (2008), Acting Head (2013), and Postgraduate Coordinator in Economics since 2004. He served as Faculty Board Member (2005-2014), Member of the Board of Higher Degree by Research (2007-2010), and holds current roles including Member of the Academic Board (elected since 2015), UWA Business School Teaching and Learning Committee, Education Committee, and Board of Postgraduate Studies.

Abu Siddique's research specializations encompass trade, development, migration, and applied economics, with emphasis on Asian and Southeast Asian economies, economic development in the Asia-Pacific region, globalisation and development, good governance and economics of corruption, Japanese economic development, regionalism, trade and development, and sustainable development. He has contributed extensively to scholarship, publishing 19 refereed journal articles, 16 edited or co-edited books, 48 book chapters, and one solely authored book. Key publications include 'The impact of external debt on growth: Evidence from highly indebted poor countries' (Journal of Policy Modeling, 2016, with E.A. Selvanathan and S. Selvanathan), 'On the profitability of commercial banks: the Sri Lankan case' (Applied Economics, 2017, with C. Ariyadasa, E.A. Selvanathan, and S. Selvanathan), and 'Corruption in Bangladesh: Review and Analysis' (2015). He has supervised 23 Honours students, 15 Masters students, and 8 PhD candidates, and secured 28 external and internal research grants totaling $388,000.
