Adam W. Herbert is Professor Emeritus at the Paul H. O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University Bloomington. He served as the seventeenth president of Indiana University from 2003 to 2007. His expertise is in public and higher education policy and politics. Herbert holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh (1971), an M.A. from the University of Southern California (1967), and a B.A. from the University of Southern California (1966).
Herbert's career includes leadership roles such as Chancellor of the State University System of Florida (1998-2001), President of the University of North Florida (1989-1998), Dean of the School of Public Affairs and Services at Florida International University, Director of Northern Virginia Programs at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, White House Fellow and Special Assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare, and Special Assistant to the Under Secretary at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. He is a member of the National Academy of Public Administration since 1989 and Regents Professor and Executive Director of the Florida Center for Public Policy and Leadership. His areas of interest include the politics of higher education, challenges of enhancing public education, and education issues impacting low-income and minority communities. During his presidency at Indiana University, Herbert established the Hoosier Presidential Scholars Program, funded by a $10 million grant from the Lilly Endowment; it was renamed the Herbert Presidential Scholars Program in his honor by the IU Board of Trustees in 2007 to support talented Indiana students.
