About Adel

Adel Nadjaran Toosi is an Associate Professor in the School of Computing and Information Systems, Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, at the University of Melbourne, where he joined in June 2024. He serves as the director of the Distributed Systems and Network Applications (DisNet) Laboratory. Toosi obtained his PhD from the University of Melbourne in 2015, having been a PhD student in the CLOUDS Laboratory from 2010 to 2014, followed by a postdoctoral research fellowship there until May 2018. He then joined Monash University Faculty of Information Technology as a Lecturer in May 2018 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in July 2022.

His research focuses on computer systems, distributed systems, networking, software-defined networking, cloud computing, serverless computing, energy efficiency, green computing, and sustainable IT. Toosi has published over 70 peer-reviewed papers, accumulating more than 6,800 citations with an h-index of 30. Key publications include "Serverless Edge Computing: Vision and Challenges" (Australasian Symposium on Parallel and Distributed Computing, 2021, Best Paper Award), "Beyond the Commute: Unlocking the Potential of Electric Vehicles as Future Energy Storage Solutions" (ACM SIGSPATIAL, 2024, Best Vision Paper Award), "Effective Utilization of Renewable Energy Sources in Fog Computing Environment via Frequency and Modulation Level Scaling" (IEEE Internet of Things Journal, 2020), and "Interconnected Cloud Computing Environments: Challenges, Taxonomy, and Survey" (ACM Computing Surveys, 2014). He has contributed to tools such as Clouds-Pi, Con-Pi, WattEdge, and AutoScaleSim. Toosi has secured over $1.4 million in funding, including ARC projects, and received awards like the Vice-Chancellor's Education Excellence Award Citation (2023), Faculty Education Excellence Award (2023), Outstanding Service Award (CCGrid 2021), and recognition in the 2025 Sustainability Awards. He has served on the editorial board of Future Generation Computer Systems, guest-edited special issues, organized workshops including Starless at PerCom 2022 and 2023, co-chaired AusPDC 2020, delivered a keynote in 2017, and chaired committees.
