About Adele

Adele Millard serves as an Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Social Sciences, Anthropology, at the University of Western Australia. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology from the University of Western Australia in 2016, with a doctoral thesis titled "The Narrative Economy of Western Australian Truffle Markets," examining business anthropology, ritual symbolism, and narrative economies in capitalist market culture. She previously obtained a Master of Business Administration from Deakin University in 2007 and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Anthropology from the University of Western Australia in 1998, with a thesis on racism and identity construction in a Western Australian farming community. Throughout her career, Millard has maintained an anthropological consultancy practice since 1998 and held various research associate positions at UWA, including in the ARC Ageing & New Media project, WUN Intergenerational Care & Equity, and Meaningful Engagement of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse People Ageing with Dementia in Residential Care. Her professional appointments include Senior Anthropologist at Archae-aus Cultural Heritage since February 2025, Senior Anthropologist at Snappy Gum Heritage Services from October 2023 to January 2025, Manager of Country & Culture at Robe River Kuruma Aboriginal Corporation from May 2022 to September 2023, and Senior Anthropologist - Native Title Research Coordinator at the Central Land Council from June 2018 to April 2022. She has also undertaken teaching roles as Unit Coordinator and Lecturer for communications courses at the University of Hong Kong SPACE International College, and as Sessional Tutor in anthropology and social work practicum research methods at UWA.

Millard's academic interests span Aboriginal Australian anthropology, Norwegian-Australian maritime history, rural sociology, communication and culture, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land and marine tenure, Native Title, maritime history, communication, history, and ethnography. Key publications include the foreword "Bridging polarised discourse" in Dispute Resolution Review (2025), "The WCAA Global Survey of Anthropological Practice (2014-2018): Reported Findings" and "A brief history of the first Global Survey of Anthropological Practice and some lessons learned" in Vibrant: Virtual Brazilian Anthropology (2022), and a book review in Oceania (2022). She was awarded Best Paper in 2025, served as Ordinary Director of the Australian Anthropological Society from December 2020 to December 2023, and coordinated the Ageing & New Media Symposium at UWA in December 2017. Millard has presented public lectures, such as on the informal migration of Norwegian mariners to Australia from 1855 to 1905 in June 2025, and contributed to evaluations of age-friendly communities programs in Western Australia.
