Adrian Blevins is Professor of English at Colby College, where she directs the Creative Writing Program and teaches poetry writing. A faculty member since 2004, she specializes in creative writing, with areas of expertise encompassing the writing of poems, contemporary American poetry, teaching creative writing, and Southern literature. Blevins earned her B.A. in English from Virginia Intermont College in 1986, her M.A. in Fiction from Hollins University in 1990, and her M.F.A. in Poetry from Warren Wilson College in 2002. Throughout her tenure at Colby, she has mentored numerous students, serving as the primary advisor for senior honors theses in poetry and creative writing, including works such as 'The Poetic Afterlives of t' by Aubrey R. Adkins, 'Clamor and other poems' by Winsor Wesson, and 'Places that Slip' by Elly K. Bookman.
Blevins is the author of four full-length poetry collections: Status Pending (Four Way Books, 2023), Appalachians Run Amok (Two Sylvias Press, 2018), Live from the Homesick Jamboree (Wesleyan University Press, 2009), and The Brass Girl Brouhaha (Wesleyan University Press, 2003). She has also co-edited Walk Till the Dogs Get Mean: Meditations on the Forbidden from Contemporary Appalachia, a collection of essays by new and emerging Appalachian writers. Her literary accomplishments have garnered significant recognition, including the 2024 Maine Literary Award in Poetry for Status Pending, the Wilder Prize from Two Sylvias Press, the Kate Tufts Discovery Award, the Rona Jaffe Writer’s Foundation Award, and many others. As Director of the Creative Writing Program, Blevins plays a pivotal role in fostering literary talent and promoting innovative approaches to poetry and prose at Colby College, contributing to the institution's vibrant English Department.
