Professor Aek Phakiti is Professor in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) in the Sydney School of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney. He earned his PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Melbourne in 2005. His primary research specializations encompass TESOL, language testing and assessment, and second language learning strategies. Phakiti has made significant contributions to the field through authorship and editorship of key publications, including Assessment for Language Teaching (Cambridge University Press, 2024, co-authored with Constant Leung), Language Testing and Assessment: From Theory to Practice (Bloomsbury, 2025), Research Methods in Applied Linguistics: A Practical Resource (Bloomsbury, editor), and The Palgrave Handbook of Applied Linguistics Research Methodology (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018, co-editor). His scholarly work has accumulated over 5,000 citations on Google Scholar, reflecting substantial impact in applied linguistics and language education.
In his career at the University of Sydney, Phakiti serves as Postgraduate Coursework Coordinator for the Sydney School of Education and Social Work. He holds leadership positions such as Editor in Chief of the University of Sydney Journal of TESOL and President Elect of the Applied Linguistics Association of Australia. Phakiti has received major awards and honors, including three University Excellence in Teaching Awards (2010, 2017, 2019), the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Research Mentor Award (2023), the TOEFL Outstanding Young Scholar Award (2010), and the 2024 Supervisor of the Year Award. He has obtained funded research, notably a TOEFL Board of Trustees COE research grant in collaboration with colleagues on international student language proficiency. Phakiti contributes to learning and teaching in TESOL programs and supervises higher degree research students in areas like language testing and assessment, fostering the next generation of scholars in the discipline.
