Dr. Afizan Azman serves as Associate Professor in the School of Computer Science, Faculty of Innovation and Technology, at Taylor's University College, and as Director of the Digital Innovation and Smart Society Impact Lab. He earned his PhD in Computer Science from Loughborough University and a Master's degree in Information Technology from University College London. With more than 15 years of experience in higher education, his academic interests encompass Human-Computer Interaction, Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, Machine Learning, Vehicle Systems and Technology, and the Internet of Things.
Throughout his career, Dr. Azman has held prominent leadership positions, including Deputy Vice-Chancellor at University College of Islam Melaka (now Universiti Melaka), President and Chief Executive Officer at Melaka International College of Science and Technology (MiCoST), and Deputy Dean at Multimedia University. He has spearheaded various impactful research projects, such as the Development of System UPU Online for Melaka, Establishing Universiti Melaka with a Concept of Digitalising Humans, Connected Car Services featuring Automatic Facial Expression Recognition for Driver Satisfaction Detection and Vehicle Data Analytics, Fatigue Attentive System for Drivers, A Real-Time Multilingual Customer Sentiment Mining, and A Framework for Vehicle Mobility Communications in Urban Environments.
Dr. Azman's scholarly output includes influential publications like "Face recognition with symmetric local graph structure (SLGS)" published in 2014 in Expert Systems with Applications (128 citations), "Smart learning media based on android technology" in 2020 (105 citations), "Non intrusive physiological measurement for driver cognitive distraction detection: Eye and mouth movements" in 2010 (63 citations), and "A review of routing protocols for vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs)" in 2020 (51 citations). Additionally, he has contributed to advancements in edge computing for vehicle-to-everything communications and fatigue monitoring systems. His engagement extends to public service as a former Think Tank Member for the State Government of Melaka's Education and Technology Portfolio, aligning digital technology with education under Pelan Strategik Melakaku Maju Jaya 2035. Through the Impact Lab, he promotes transdisciplinary collaborations to advance AI, big data analytics, cybersecurity, and automation for sustainable smart societies.
