Agnes Berki, Ph.D., is Professor of Biology and Chair of the Biology Department at Ave Maria University. She also holds the positions of Chair and Program Director for the Health Science program and Chair for the Marine Biology program. Dr. Berki earned her B.S. in Chemistry and Physics and M.Sc. in Chemistry and Physics from Lajos Kossuth University in Hungary. She obtained her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Maryland. In these leadership roles, she oversees departmental curricula, including options for pre-medicine tracks, ensuring alignment with the university's commitment to faithful Catholic formation through scientific education.
Dr. Berki specializes in molecular biology techniques such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, cell culture, DNA extraction, DNA analysis, electrophoresis, Western blot analysis, SDS-PAGE, cloning, and protein purification. Her research output includes the publication 'Targeted Hybridization Capture of SARS-CoV-2 and Metagenomics Enables Genetic Variant Discovery and Nasal Microbiome Insights' (2021), which has received 40 citations. She actively mentors undergraduate students in directed research and participates in academic symposia, including student research presentations. Additionally, Dr. Berki serves as president of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society chapter at Ave Maria University and has presented at the 5th Conference of the Association of Hungarian-American Academicians at the Hungarian Embassy. Through her involvement with Annunciation Circle, she supports students both on campus and beyond.
