About Anna

Associate Professor Anna Hatton is Head of Physiotherapy in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Queensland. She holds a BSc(Hons) in Physiotherapy and a PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences, both awarded by Teesside University in the United Kingdom. Her research focuses on the development and evaluation of novel footwear devices designed to improve balance, mobility, foot sensory perception and physical activity in healthy individuals and those with clinical conditions such as diabetic peripheral neuropathy and multiple sclerosis. She serves as Centre Director of the UQ Centre for Neurorehabilitation, Ageing and Balance Research and is an Affiliate of that centre. Prior to her current appointments she received an Australian Endeavour Postdoctoral Research Fellowship and the Baroness Robson Travel Scholarship in 2010, which supported postdoctoral work at Neuroscience Research Australia.

Professor Hatton has attracted more than $1.7 million in competitive research funding from organisations including the National Health and Medical Research Council, Diabetes Australia and the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering. In 2016 she received the Young Tall Poppy Science Award from the Australian Institute of Policy and Science. She has authored three book chapters and more than 45 peer-reviewed journal articles, with key publications including studies on the effects of textured shoe insoles in people with diabetic peripheral neuropathy published in 2025 and systematic reviews on plantar surface stimulation for balance and gait. She is Associate Editor for the journal Gait & Posture and serves as Elected Secretary on the Executive Committee of the Australian and New Zealand Falls Prevention Society. She is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
