Dr. Ajay Sharma serves as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Dentistry and Oral Health, part of Griffith University's School of Medicine and Dentistry. He is the Program Director for the Master of Dentistry Program and the Implantology Lead, overseeing advanced training in implant dentistry. Sharma obtained his Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) degrees from institutions in India, completing his postgraduate education in 2008. Prior to his current role, he held a position as a Senior Lecturer at a reputed dental school in India, where he contributed to teaching and research in dentistry.
Sharma's academic interests center on periodontology and implant dentistry, encompassing peri-implantitis therapies, surgical and non-surgical interventions, implant surface modifications such as chitosan and keratin coatings, photobiomodulatory effects on wound healing, probiotics in periodontal management, and the bidirectional relationship between diabetes mellitus and periodontal disease. His key publications include 'Peri-Implantitis Therapy Using Surgical Methods: A Systematic Review' (2023), 'A retrospective study on the prognostic factors and success rates of non-surgical periodontal therapy in stage III/IV periodontitis' (2024), 'Evaluating Post-Insertion Complications and Patient Satisfaction with Complete Dentures Fabricated by Dental Students' (2024), 'Comparative photobiomodulatory effects of 660 nm, 810 nm on wound healing' (2025), 'The manufacturing method and guidance system affects the accuracy of static guided implant surgery: a systematic review' (2025), 'Diabetes mellitus and periodontal disease: The call for interprofessional collaboration' (2022), 'Peri-Implantitis: Is it the Surface or the Alloy that's Important?' (2020), and 'The effects of keratin-coated titanium on osteoblast function and bone regeneration' (2024). Sharma supervises postgraduate research theses, including those on peri-implantitis and sinus lift procedures, and has served as a Guest Editor for a special issue in 3 Biotech. Through his teaching and leadership roles, he mentors students in advanced dental practices at the Gold Coast campus.
