Akiko Uchiyama

Dr Akiko Uchiyama is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Languages and Cultures within the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Queensland. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy in 2007 from the University of Queensland, with a thesis entitled "Translation, power, postcoloniality: Fukuzawa Yukichi’s translation of the West," completed in the School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies, and holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Arts (Advanced) from the same institution. Uchiyama specialises in translation studies, with research interests in postcolonial translation theory, gender in translation, girls' fiction in translation, and the history of translation in Japan. She serves as the Convenor of the Master of Arts in Japanese Interpreting and Translation (MAJIT) program and is accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters as a professional translator.

Uchiyama's scholarly output includes co-editing Border-crossing Japanese Literature: Reading Multiplicity (Routledge, 2023) with Barbara Hartley, contributing the introduction and chapter "Sydney!"; Diverse Voices in Translation Studies in East Asia (Peter Lang, 2019) with Nana Sato-Rossberg, featuring her chapter "Translating as writing: Wakamatsu Shizuko's empathetic translation as a creative literary art"; and contributions to Women and Soldiers: Sexual Violence and Survival Strategies in Occupied Japan (Trans Pacific Press, 2024). Selected book chapters are "The politics of translation in Meiji Japan" in The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Politics (2018), "Assimilation or resistance? Yukichi Fukuzawa's digestive translation of the West" (2012), and "Japanese girl's comfort reading of Anne of Green Gables" (2010). Prominent journal articles encompass "Akage no An in Japanese girl culture: Muraoka Hanako's translation of Anne of Green Gables" (Japan Forum, 2014), "Meeting the New Anne Shirley: Matsumoto Yūko's Intimate Translation of Anne of Green Gables" (TTR, 2013), and "Applications of technologies in T&I courses in Australia: perceptions of T&I academics" (Journal of Translation and Language Studies, 2022). She also co-translated Tōkina-to: The Story of the Owl God’s Little Sister (2020).
