Great Professor!
Professor Alan Broadfoot is a distinguished academic and research leader at the University of Newcastle, holding a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (Honours), Master of Engineering, and Doctor of Philosophy from the institution. He served as the inaugural Executive Director of the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER) from its establishment in 2010 until March 2026, transforming BHP’s former Central Research Laboratory into a thriving 3.8-hectare innovation precinct on the Callaghan campus. Under his stewardship, NIER expanded to accommodate over 360 staff members across 19 research centres, more than 250 PhD scholars engaged in industry-partnered projects, and collaborations with approximately 160 industry partners. The institute secured over $164 million in funding between 2011 and 2019, driving advancements in resource productivity, energy technologies, advanced materials, and sustainability.
Broadfoot’s leadership fostered key initiatives, including the ARC Industrial Transformation Centre for Advanced Australian Iron Ore Technologies led by Laureate Professor Kevin Galvin, $35 million in federal funding for Coal Methane Abatement Technologies under Professor Behdad Moghtaderi, and a $15 million BHP-funded Centre for Ironmaking Materials Research over ten years. He oversaw the establishment of the Pacific Node in partnership with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme, the University’s first Doctoral Training Centre in Advanced Mining Equipment, Technology and Services, and infrastructure developments such as NIER C Block and the Glasshouses. NIER’s scope broadened to encompass food and agribusiness innovation for productivity and sustainability, as well as water resource management and remediation. Broadfoot is a Fellow of the Royal Society of New South Wales since 2017. Currently, he holds the position of Senior Advisor at NIER within the Research and Innovation Division, contributing to projects like the Energy Skills Hub, Future Industries Facility, and the Next Generation Resources Park, which aims to enhance prototyping, manufacturing, and training in new energy, critical minerals, and high-tech metals sectors.
