About Alan

Alan Chandler is Interim Dean of Research and Reader in Architecture in the Department of Architecture & Visual Arts at the University of East London, within the School of Architecture Computing and Engineering. He serves as Co-Director of the Sustainability Research Institute. His areas of expertise include material technology, the theory of architectural conservation design, and community engagement. Chandler leads research on sustainable and low-carbon construction, fabric-formed concrete development, and the politicisation of architectural heritage. He is a partner in the Sugarcrete project focused on bio-based materials from sugarcane waste.

Chandler previously taught at the Architectural Association, Goldsmiths' College London, Cambridge University, Edinburgh University, and the CASS. He holds Dip.AA and RIBA Parts 1, 2, and 3 qualifications from the Architectural Association. External roles include Co-Chair of the RIBA Conservation Register Steering Group and Visiting Professor at Universidad Católica in Santiago de Chile. He has reviewed for the Arts and Humanities Research Council, Charrette journal, and RIBA Publications. Key publications include the 2019 book The Production of Heritage: The Politicisation of Architectural Conservation, co-authored with M. Pace and published by Routledge. Chandler has contributed to funding initiatives such as the Newton Fund Links Award and ERDF-funded energy projects, and he has delivered professional CPD for the RIBA on conservation topics.
