Dr Alan Crake is a Lecturer in Human Resource Management in the School of Management and Marketing, Curtin Business School, Faculty of Business and Law at Curtin University, Perth. He holds a PhD along with a Bachelor of Business from Curtin University and a Master of Business Administration from Heriot-Watt University. His academic career includes prior roles such as Lecturer in Economics and Commerce at the University of Western Australia Business School, as noted in UWA staff publications around 2014, and earlier affiliation with the University of Canberra where he was listed with his undergraduate and master's qualifications in institutional handbooks from 2000 to 2003. At Curtin, Dr Crake is actively involved in the People, Culture and Organisations group within his school and serves as the unit coordinator for MGMT2008 Human Resources Management Introduction, contributing to the education of undergraduate students in core human resource principles.
Dr Crake has made notable contributions to teaching and learning scholarship. In the second half of 2015, he collaborated with Dr Megan Le Clus and Katie Turton on a Curtin Teaching and Learning Academic Scholarship Seed Grant project titled 'Identifying the Big Five teaching and learning issues in the School of Management, Curtin Business School.' The initiative employed a qualitative methodology, including semi-structured interviews with students and focus groups with teaching staff, informed by a literature review and conceptual framework. Key issues identified encompassed English language proficiency, students' motivation and commitment, academic competence, industry preparedness of graduates, casualisation of teaching, and instructional design. The findings aimed to guide future teaching initiatives for improved quality, student experience, and supportive learning environments, and were presented at the Teaching & Learning Forum 2016. Additionally, Dr Crake is a co-author of the fourth edition of Managing Employee Performance and Reward: Strategies, Practices and Prospects, published by Cambridge University Press in 2025. He specifically contributed the IT Angels running case studies across chapters 1 to 11, providing practical applications in performance and reward management.
