Alan Huckleberry is a Professor of Piano Pedagogy in the School of Music at The University of Iowa. Praised for his impeccable musicianship, exhilarating technique, and panache by the American Record Guide, he maintains an active career as a concert pianist, collaborative artist, and educator. Huckleberry began his piano studies in Germany before returning to the United States to complete his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in piano performance at the University of Michigan in 2001 and 2003, respectively, under the guidance of Arthur Greene. He also pursued piano pedagogy studies there and served as chamber music coordinator and faculty pianist for the University of Michigan's All-State program.
At The University of Iowa, Huckleberry has held positions progressing from assistant professor of piano pedagogy and collaborative arts to full professor. His performance schedule includes numerous faculty recitals featuring Beethoven piano sonatas, collaborations with the Iowa Woodwind Quintet, saxophonist Kenneth Tse, baritone Stephen Swanson, cellist Anthony Arnone, flutist Nicole Esposito, and appearances with the Iowa Symphony Band. He has presented guest recitals at institutions such as the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Salisbury University. Huckleberry's discography encompasses eight compact disc recordings, including Dreaming in Colours: Music for Bassoon and Piano (2011) and works on Willowhayne Records. A significant contribution to piano pedagogy is the University of Iowa Piano Pedagogy Project, which he co-directs with Jason Sifford. Initiated in 2011, the project has produced over 9,000 video recordings of intermediate-level teaching repertoire from Baroque to contemporary periods, freely available on YouTube for educators and students. Huckleberry coordinates music transfer advising, outreach initiatives like Piano Sundays at Old Capitol, and summer piano camps.
