Albie Brooks serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Accounting, Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Melbourne. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne, Diploma of Education, Master of Business, and PhD from Victoria University, along with Fellow of CPA Australia (FCPA) status. Appointed as Senior Teaching Fellow in Management Accounting in January 2008, Brooks has advanced to his current role, focusing his academic career on management accounting education and scholarship. His research specializations encompass corporate governance issues, the development of teaching case studies in management accounting and control, innovative educational materials, and contemporary management accounting topics. Brooks has contributed extensively to accounting pedagogy through practical teaching innovations, including fostering communities of practice in accounting during challenging periods such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
Brooks is a co-author of prominent university-level textbooks, including Management Accounting (multiple editions, co-authored with Leslie Eldenburg, Judy Oliver, Gillian Vesty, Nicholas Pawsey, and others) and Contemporary Management Accounting. He has also authored and presented materials for the CPA Australia professional program. As host of TAPS: The Accounting Podcast Series, Brooks showcases research outputs from the University of Melbourne Accounting Department staff and visiting academics, facilitating knowledge dissemination in the field. His involvement extends to international professional bodies, serving as Co-Chair of the Instructional Resources Committee for the Management Accounting Section of the American Accounting Association. Key scholarly publications include "Conceptualising integrated thinking in practice" (Meditari Accountancy Research, 2016), "Evidence from a Survey of Independent Directors in Australia" (Australian Accounting Review, 2009, with Keryn Chalmers and Judy Oliver), and teaching cases such as "Lucro Island: Strategic Budgeting" and "St George Hospital: Flexible Budgeting, Volume Variance, and Cost Containment" (Issues in Accounting Education, 2017). These works underscore his commitment to bridging theory and practice in management accounting.
