Alex Borland is the Group Leader Facilities (Campus) within the Property Services department at the University of Otago, based in Dunedin. As Facilities Manager for Professional Services, Lecture Theatres, and Libraries, he acts as the primary point of contact for all building-related needs. His responsibilities encompass liaising with building users, handling maintenance and development requests, providing advice on relevant policies and procedures, overseeing asset management plans, and performing facilities audits. Borland is listed as Head FM for Prof Services & Lecture Theatres in the university's Dunedin Campus Map documentation.
Borland plays a key role in campus infrastructure enhancements. In December 2024, he commented on the refurbishment of major lecture theatres, stating that Burns 2 and 1 seats would be upcycled with powder-coated frames and new upholstery to minimize landfill waste and reduce costs, similar to recent updates in Castle 2 involving wall painting, floor polishing, recarpeting of tiered areas, and increased aisle widths for improved accessibility. In February 2023, addressing the refresh of Auahi Ora Union Dining Hall following the closure of several campus cafés, Borland indicated that chairs and tables would remain at the Hunter Centre temporarily, with plans to add furniture and space for students to heat their own food; the Lab space might serve for relaxation and informal meetings, while options for Frankly Sandwiches site were under review. Additionally, in 2024, he won first place in the FMANZ 'Strike a pose for World FM Day' photo competition.
