Professor Alexander Scheuermann holds the position of Professor and Director of Teaching and Learning in the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Queensland. A specialist in geotechnical engineering, he earned his Doctoral Diploma of Engineering from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and holds a Dr.-Ing. habil. His career includes research at the Institute of Soil Mechanics and Rock Mechanics in Karlsruhe before joining UQ in 2010, where he heads the GeoSystems Group and previously served as Deputy Director of the Geotechnical Engineering Centre. Scheuermann's academic background emphasizes advanced soil mechanics, porous media dynamics, fluid flow, and soil characterization using electromagnetic methods.
His research specializations encompass the application of electromagnetic measurement methods in civil engineering, coupled hydraulic/mechanic/electric properties of soils, hydraulics and mechanics of unsaturated soils, and mathematical and experimental modelling of internal erosion processes. Additional interests include flood prevention, technical flood protection, performance of roads and pavements, soft soil behaviour, and the mechanics and hydraulics of fractured media, including hydraulic fracturing. Scheuermann has authored one book titled Ortsaufgelöste zeitbereichsreflektometrie in geohydraulik und geomechanik (2012), three book chapters, 151 journal articles, and 124 conference papers. Notable publications include "Quantification of soil state variables using electromagnetic methods" (2018), "Geotechnical Classification of Gap-Graded Soils Using Geoelectric Measurements: Linking Electrical Conductivity Parameters to Fines Content and Particle Shape" (2026, Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering), "Investigations of compacted soil-organics mixtures with Spectral Induced Polarisation" (2026, Geophysical Journal International), and "Particle shape effects on breakage behaviors in granular materials: a multiscale geotechnical perspective" (2025, Computers and Geotechnics). His scholarship has attracted over 3,300 citations. Scheuermann has received major funding, including an ARC Future Fellowship (2018-2023) on erosion processes in soils across scales, multiple ARC Discovery and Linkage Projects, Queensland Government Smart Futures Fellowship (2012-2015), and industry grants. He supervises postgraduate research in related fields and contributes to international scientific committees, such as the International Conference on Scour and Erosion.
