About Alexandra

Professor Alexandra Philipsen is Director of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the University Hospital Bonn, part of Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, and has held this position since 2018 as a W3 professor. She earned her doctorate in 1998 in neuropediatrics from the University of Freiburg and completed her habilitation in 2009 on the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder in adulthood. Her prior appointments include roles at the University of Freiburg from 1999 to 2014, where she advanced to managing senior physician, and as the founding director of the psychiatric department at the European Medical School Oldenburg-Groningen from 2014 to 2017, during which she also served as vice dean for university clinical affairs.

Her research focuses on translational therapy research in attention and emotion regulation, the development of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for adult ADHD, psychotherapy research, and personalized medicine approaches. Clinically, she specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses including affective disorders, ADHD in adults, personality disorders, crisis intervention, and disorder-oriented psychotherapy. She has received awards such as the DGPPN prize for medical psychotherapy in 2012 and the Saarland ADHD research award in 2012. Philipsen has authored books including Psychotherapie der ADHS im Erwachsenenalter (2004) and serves in editorial roles for journals such as Der Nervenarzt and Borderline Personality and Emotion Dysregulation. She holds additional qualifications as a supervisor for behavior therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy.
