About Alexey

Dr Alexey Ganin is Senior Lecturer in the School of Chemistry at the University of Glasgow. His research at the Glasgow Energy Conversion On Solids (GECOS) group focuses on addressing the global energy challenge through efficient, scalable and sustainable electrochemical technologies. Key themes include advanced hydrogen technology and electrochemical fuels, with work on solid state materials for synthesis through to scaled testing in hydrogen electrolysers; battery science, particularly fast charging sodium-ion and potassium-ion systems; and contributions to low-power electronic platforms based on 2D materials as part of the national NEED2D programme to reduce the power footprint of large-scale computation and AI.

Research activities encompass storing excess renewable energy as chemical feedstock using electrolysers for hydrogen and other chemicals from water and CO2, with developments in 2D materials such as MoTe2 films for water electrolysis. Work on energy storage beyond Li-ion batteries examines 2D transition metal chalcogenides like CrSe2 cathodes for potassium-ion batteries, achieving full capacity utilisation. Additional efforts support the NEED2D programme through chemical vapour deposition (CVD) synthesis of 2D thin film materials, pulsed electrodeposition, and functionalisation via covalent surface modification, alongside participation in projects involving advanced instrumentation such as atom probe tomography.
