About Ali

Professor M. Ali Darendeliler is Chair of the Discipline of Orthodontics at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Sydney, and Head of the Department of Orthodontics at Sydney Dental Hospital. His academic qualifications include BDS from the University of Istanbul, PhD from the University of Gazi in Turkey, Certificate in Orthodontics from the University of Geneva in Switzerland, Diploma in Orthodontics from the University of Gazi, Privat Docent, MRACDS (Ortho), and FICD. His career encompasses postgraduate studies in orthodontics at the Universities of Istanbul and Geneva, clinical instructor and postgraduate teaching and research coordinator roles at the University of Geneva, visiting assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and research professor at the University of Southern California. Appointed Associate Professor at the University of Sydney in 1996, he became Professor and Head of Discipline in 1997, positions he maintains alongside leadership at Sydney Dental Hospital since 2001.

Darendeliler's research focuses on orthodontic root resorption, tooth movement, obstructive sleep apnoea, temporary anchorage devices, sequential aligners, self-ligating brackets, magnetic fields and forces, and dentofacial orthopaedics. He has earned the R. Begg Award from the Australian Society of Orthodontists for outstanding research contributions, the Sheldon Friel Memorial Lecture—the highest honour from the European Orthodontic Society—and the Tom Graber Research Award from the American Association of Orthodontists. His supervisees have secured multiple Elsdon Storey Research Essay awards, Houston Awards, and other distinctions. Notable publications include 'The effects of samarium cobalt magnets and pulsed electromagnetic fields on tooth movement' (1995, American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics), 'Distal molar movement using pendulum appliance' Parts I and II (1997, Angle Orthodontist), and book chapters on orthodontic aligners, root resorption, and oral appliances for sleep apnoea. With over 10,000 citations, his scholarship impacts biomechanics, iatrogenic damage prevention, and multidisciplinary sleep apnoea management. He lectures internationally and directs the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Orthodontics) program.
