Dr. Ali Reza Alaei serves as a Senior Lecturer in Information Technology and Computer Science in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Southern Cross University. He obtained his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Mysore in 2012. His career includes postdoctoral research fellowships at the University of Tours in France and research fellowships at Griffith University's School of ICT and Griffith Institute for Tourism (GIFT), complemented by extensive industry experience. Alaei's research focuses on document image analysis, big data analytics, biometrics, sentiment analysis, human visual system modeling, classification methods, and technology innovation. He participates in university research clusters such as Reefs and Oceans, Catchments, Coasts and Communities, and ZeroWaste, applying advanced technologies to assess community sentiments on tourism and environmental issues. In education, he teaches database systems, big data analysis, and expert systems, while supervising master's final-year projects, research degrees, and co-supervising PhD students.
Alaei has produced over 50 publications in high-impact international journals and conferences, demonstrating significant influence in his field. Key works include 'Sentiment analysis in tourism: capitalizing on big data' (2019, 887 citations), 'ICDAR 2013 handwriting segmentation contest' (2013, 229 citations), 'Performance of an off-line signature verification method based on texture features on a large indic-script signature dataset' (2016, 173 citations), 'Monitoring the environment and human sentiment on the Great Barrier Reef: Assessing the potential of collective sensing' (2017, 155 citations), 'A new scheme for unconstrained handwritten text-line segmentation' (2011, 149 citations), 'Revisiting Tourism Destination Image: A Holistic Measurement Framework Using Big Data' (2021, 123 citations), and 'Evolution of Data-Driven Flood Forecasting' (2025).
