Professor Alice Bird MA VetMB DipECVAA MRCVS AFHEA serves as Teaching Professor in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia and Principal Clinical Anaesthetist at The Queen's Veterinary School Hospital, Department of Veterinary Medicine, University of Cambridge. She holds EBVS® European Specialist and RCVS Recognised Specialist qualifications in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia. In this capacity, she leads the Anaesthesia and Critical Care Team, delivering advanced clinical anaesthesia and critical care services for companion and farm animals, and offers consultancy services. Her academic background includes the MA and VetMB degrees from the University of Cambridge, along with the Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (DipECVAA), membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS), and Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).
Professor Bird also holds the position of Bye-Fellow and Director of Studies in Veterinary Medicine at Girton College, University of Cambridge, specialising in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia, where she supervises undergraduate teaching. She directs the Senior Clinical Training Scholarship (SCTS) in Anaesthesia, a renewable three-year residency program at the Queen's Veterinary School Hospital. This training emphasises clinical anaesthesia and critical care duties under supervision, progressing to independent case management, with dedicated time for rotations in cardiology and imaging, weekly clinical and research seminars, journal and book clubs, and participation in the veterinary anaesthetic emergency service. At least 25% of the program is allocated to off-clinics activities, including clinical research projects, manuscript preparation, external rotations such as equine anaesthesia externships, self-study, conferences, and undergraduate teaching. The scholarship supports professional development with funding for CPD, ECVAA examination fees, and publication of at least two first-author papers. Professor Bird similarly oversees Junior Clinical Training Scholarships in Veterinary Anaesthesia, fostering the next generation of specialists through hands-on clinical experience, evidence-based practice, and scientific inquiry in veterinary anaesthesia, pain management, peri-operative medicine, and critical care across small and large animal species.
