A 2024 investigation into muscadine grape extracts found they can reduce fat accumulation while supporting better insulin response and blood sugar regulation in models of obesity. The work adds to a body of evidence built over decades on this native southeastern U.S. fruit, Vitis rotundifolia, whose thick skins and seeds concentrate protective polyphenols at levels that set it apart from many table grapes.
One researcher who has tracked these effects closely is Dr. Patricia Gallagher at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Her team has tested a concentrated muscadine grape extract across cell cultures, animal models, and early human trials. The extract contains more than seventy distinct polyphenols, a mixture the group believes works through several pathways at once rather than a single target.
