Allison Miner, EdD, MS, RDN, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutrition and Food Studies at George Mason University College of Public Health, a position she has held since August 2023. In this role, she develops and teaches required nutrition courses for the Master of Nutrition Dietetic Concentration and serves as Assistant Director of the program. She earned a Doctor of Education in Community College Leadership from Morgan State University in May 2014, a Master of Science in International Nutrition from the University of Maryland in May 1995, and a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics, magna cum laude, from the University of Maryland in May 1992. Licensed as a dietitian-nutritionist in Maryland (LDN DX2910), the District of Columbia (DI925), and formerly Florida (ND7719), her specialty is obesity and cardiovascular diseases. Research interests include obesity in the African American female population, cardiovascular health, food systems, and the urban environment. She is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics since 2016 and blogs on health and food topics. Miner also provides medical nutrition therapy at the Department of Homeland Security Transportation Security Administration Health Unit since 2020, where she conducts one-on-one counseling, group webinars, and cooking demonstrations on weight management, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and related topics for over 68,000 employees.
Prior professional experience includes Lecturer and Course Director for Food Systems and Public Health at George Washington University School of Public Health from 2019 to 2023; Visiting Director of the Master’s Program in Nutrition at the University of the District of Columbia from 2017 to 2018, teaching graduate and undergraduate nutrition courses; tenured Full Professor and Course Coordinator for Nutrition and Food Science at Prince George’s Community College from 1994 to 2014, developing curricula for underserved populations; Clinical Dietitian at Inova Hospital Alexandria CardioPulmonary Rehabilitation from 2020 to 2023, creating education programs for heart and pulmonary patients; and Clinical Dietitian at Kaiser Permanente from 2018 to 2020. She served as SME and Reviewer for Inclusivity and Diversity for Cengage from 2021 to 2023 and as a Quality Matters Certified Trainer from 2007 to 2014. Key publications are Miner and Jackson (1995), 'Assessment of Coronary Heart Disease Risk in a Central and South American Sample Living in Washington, D.C.,' Journal of the American Dietetic Association, and Gill et al. (2017), 'Comparison of Metabolic Syndrome Indicators in Two Samples of Central and South Americans Living in the Washington, D.C. Area.' She has reviewed nutrition textbooks and is writing a book on weight loss strategies relevant to African American women. Miner serves on the Alexandria Public Health Commission since 2018 and the International WELL Building Institute Nourishment Advisory Board since 2021.
