Dr. Amani Elobeid serves as a Teaching Professor in the Department of Economics at Iowa State University, where she also holds the prestigious Ron and Lynn Deiter Endowed Chair for Sustaining Excellence in Agricultural Business. A faculty member in the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development (CARD), she has dedicated her career to advancing knowledge in Business & Economics, particularly in agricultural markets and policy. Elobeid earned her Ph.D. in Economics from Iowa State University in 2001, specializing in International Trade, International Finance, and Agricultural Policy, along with an M.S. in Economics from the same institution and a B.S. in Economics (Honors) from the University of Khartoum, Sudan. Her professional journey at Iowa State began in 1991 as a Graduate Research Assistant at CARD, progressing through roles such as Research Assistant, Assistant Scientist, Associate Scientist, Lecturer, Adjunct Assistant and Associate Professor, and currently as Principles of Economics Coordinator and Academic Advisor. She teaches undergraduate courses in economics, money and banking, and agricultural markets, and oversees the Agricultural Business program and club.
Elobeid's research focuses on agricultural economics, agricultural policy, renewable fuels and energy, and international trade, with expertise in the modeling and analysis of agricultural and biofuel markets and their impacts on agriculture and the environment. Her work has been published in leading journals such as Nature Food, American Journal of Agricultural Economics, Energy Economics, Energy Policy, Environmental Research Letters, Land Use Policy, and Science. Key publications include “Trade scenarios compensating for halted wheat and maize exports from Russia and Ukraine increase carbon emissions without easing food insecurity” (Nature Food, 2022), “China-U.S. trade dispute and its impact on global agricultural markets, the U.S. economy, and greenhouse gas emissions” (Journal of Agricultural Economics, 2021), “Impact of Climate Change on Global Agricultural Markets under Different Shared Socioeconomic Pathways” (Agricultural Economics, 2021), “Impacts of the Russian-Ukraine Conflict on Global Agriculture Commodity Prices, Trade, and Cropland Reallocation” (Choices, 2023), and “Effects of a Carbon Tax in the United States on Agricultural Markets and Carbon Emissions from Land-Use Change” (Land Use Policy, 2021). With nearly 10,000 citations, her research informs global policies on trade, climate change, biofuels, and food security. Elobeid has received major awards including the 2025 Outstanding Achievement in Research Award from Iowa State University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the 2024 Interdisciplinary Team Research Award, the 2020 College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Excellence in Teaching by Lecturers and Adjunct Faculty Award, the 2014 University Professional and Scientific Research Award, and the Fulbright Scholarship in 1989.
