Amilcar Oliveira Carvalho-Neto is a Teacher in the English Language Centre at the University of Otago's Pathway and English Language Centre, located in the Otago Business School Commerce Building in Dunedin. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Universidade Católica de Santos (UNISANTOS) in Brazil and holds professional qualifications including CEELT II, CELTA, and DELTA from Cambridge. With a rich career in English language education spanning more than two decades, he spent four years teaching in London, England, followed by over fifteen years in Santos, Brazil. In 2002, he completed his DELTA course in Christchurch, New Zealand, and moved to Dunedin, taking on roles such as Director of Studies, Teacher Trainer, and External Examinations Manager prior to his current full-time teaching position, which dates back to at least 2006.
Carvalho-Neto specializes in teaching test preparation skills for examinations such as KET, PET, FCE, CAE, IELTS, and TOEIC. He has played a key role in adapting courses to online delivery, hosting large classes from home for Japanese students during the COVID-19 pandemic in partnership with institutions including the University of Tokyo. Known for innovative approaches, he delivered a workshop at the CLESOL 2010 conference entitled 'Using songs in the language classroom,' sharing techniques to leverage music for eliciting grammar, practicing vocabulary and phonemic script, introducing writing tasks, and developing listening and reading skills.
