Dr. Amy M. Corey serves as Lecturer of Communication & Media Studies in the Department of Communication & Media Studies at California State University, San Marcos, within the College of Humanities, Arts, Behavioral & Social Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Communication from the University of Denver, where her dissertation examined reality television, and a B.A. in Communication from the University of San Francisco. Joining the CSUSM faculty in the Fall 2016 semester, Dr. Corey demonstrates a deep commitment to the intellectual life, passionately engaging students in the classroom and fostering critical thinking about communication phenomena. Her career trajectory reflects a consistent focus on communication studies across undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels.
Dr. Corey's research and teaching center on issues of diversity and social justice as portrayed in media and popular culture. Working from feminist and critical traditions, she explores media criticism, the politics of representation involving race, gender, and sexuality, cultural practices and appropriation, and intercultural communication within global contexts. Her publications include a chapter titled 'The 'Real' O.C.: Laguna Beach, MTV, and the Business of Reality Television' in The Business of Entertainment edited by Robert C. Sickels (2008), contributions to The Development of Human Communication and the Texas Speech Communication Journal, and entries in numerous encyclopedias. She has presented scholarly work such as '#Hashtag Activism, Flak, and the Manufacture of Dissent' at the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association (PCA/ACA) National Conference in Washington, D.C. In her courses, including COMM 455 Television and Culture, COMM 465, MDIA 365, and MDIA 452, Dr. Corey guides students to maintain viewing logs to analyze personal participation in television culture, promoting awareness of media's influence on thoughts, values, and societal engagement. She is recognized as a CALM Faculty Awardee through the Cougars Affordable Learning Materials Program for adopting open educational resources in her classes.
