Professor Amy Cutter-Mackenzie-Knowles is a Professor of Sustainability, Environment and Education in the Faculty of Education at Southern Cross University. She holds a Bachelor of Education (Honours) from Griffith University and a PhD from Central Queensland University. As Executive Dean of the Faculty of Education for the past six years, she has led its transformation into a nationally recognised leader in innovative, research-led education, expanding student numbers from 2,000 to over 8,000. She also serves as Research Leader of the Sustainability, Environment and the Arts in Education (SEAE) Research Centre.
Her scholarly work centers on climate change, childhoodnature, posthuman philosophy, child-framed research methodologies, and the pivot points between climate, childhood, Country, and education. Professor Cutter-Mackenzie-Knowles has led over 40 national and international research projects and is currently the lead investigator on a 2024-2027 Australian Research Council Discovery grant focused on climate change education on/with Country. She has authored or edited more than 180 publications, including the recent book Posthuman Research Playspaces: Climate Child Imaginaries (Routledge, with David Rousell), the Research Handbook on Childhoodnature: Assemblages of Childhood and Nature Research (Springer), Walking as Critical Inquiry (Springer, 2023), and Children's Carbon Cultures (2021). As immediate past Editor-in-Chief of the Australian Journal of Environmental Education (Cambridge University Press), she has significantly influenced the field. Her accolades include an Australian Teaching Excellence Award and Citation from the Office for Learning and Teaching, and the Australian Association for Environmental Education Fellowship, a Life Achievement Award for her outstanding contributions to environmental education research. Through initiatives like the Student Advisory Group in Education (SAGE), the Voice Platform, and the co-designed Faculty of Education 2030 Strategy using the Delphi method, she promotes student voice, collaboration, power-sharing, and the integration of Indigenous and First Nations knowledge systems in teacher education.
