Andrea Hodge is the Fluor Professor in Engineering and Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science and Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Southern California’s Viterbi School of Engineering, serving as Chair of the Mork Family Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. She earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1997 and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University in 2002. After her Ph.D., she was a Postdoctoral Fellow and Staff Scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory from 2002 to 2007. Joining USC in 2007 as Assistant Professor in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, she advanced to Associate Professor in 2013, full Professor, and held roles including Vice Provost for Undergraduate Programs from 2016 to 2020 and Co-Director of the Center for Excellence in Nano Imaging from 2019 to 2022.
Her research focuses on the synthesis of engineered microstructures with nanoscale precision for tailored properties in advanced applications, employing combinatorial and high-throughput methods for materials like nanocrystalline structures, thin film coatings, multilayers, hierarchical materials, and grain boundary engineered alloys. Leading the Hodge Materials Research Group, she has co-authored over 90 peer-reviewed publications, including highly cited works such as “Size effects on the mechanical behavior of nanoporous Au” (Nano Letters, 2006), “Scaling equation for yield strength of nanoporous open-cell foams” (Acta Materialia, 2007), and “Nanoporous Au: A high yield strength material” (Journal of Applied Physics, 2005). Professor Hodge’s impact is recognized through fellowships in the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2023), Materials Research Society (2024), and ASM International (2025), along with awards including NSF CAREER (2010), DARPA Young Faculty Award (2012), ONR Young Investigator Program Award (2012), TMS Julia and Johannes Weertman Educator Award (2020), and Hanna Reisler Mentoring Award (2018).
