Andrew Guzzomi is an Associate Professor in the School of Engineering at the University of Western Australia (UWA), specializing in Mechanical Engineering and affiliated with the Institute of Agriculture. He holds a BE and PhD from UWA, completing his doctorate in 2007 in dynamics and vibration under the supervision of Dr Dianne Hesterman and Professor Brian Stone. As Professor Stone's last PhD student, Guzzomi was mentored to become the first mechanical engineering postgraduate teaching intern through UWA's Postgraduate Teaching Internship Scheme. Following his PhD, he received a UWA Whitfeld Fellowship and a scholarship from the Italian Embassy in Canberra. From 2007 to 2010, he served as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DIEM) and Department of Agricultural Engineering (DIagra) at the University of Bologna, Italy, including a Senior Postdoctoral Researcher role in 2010. Returning to UWA in 2011 as an Honorary Research Fellow, he progressed through positions including Research Fellow for the Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative and Assistant Professor (2015-2017), Senior Research Fellow in agricultural engineering and Senior Lecturer (2017-2018), before becoming Associate Professor. Guzzomi is the founding Director of the Centre for Engineering Innovation: Agriculture & Ecological Restoration (CEI:AgER) at UWA and is recognized as the university's inaugural agricultural engineer.
Guzzomi's research expertise encompasses agricultural engineering, restoration engineering, innovation, kinematics, dynamics and vibration, machine design, and engineering education. He has authored or co-authored 42 journal articles, 24 conference papers, one book, and one book chapter, with recent publications including 'Adhesive free Melaleuca rhaphiophylla (Swamp Paperbark) bark as an engineered wood product' (2025), 'Swathing subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum) does not suck: a promising alternative to vacuum seed harvesting' (2025), and 'Accuracy of Selection in Early Generations of Field Pea Breeding Increases by Exploiting the Information Contained in Correlated Traits' (2023). His work has secured over $16 million in funding in the past five years, including a $4.28 million ARC grant (2022-2026). Guzzomi has received numerous awards, such as West Australian Innovator of the Year 2016 for Seed Flamer technology, Tall Poppy Award 2018, 40Under40 Award 2018, Western Australian Innovator of the Year 2019 for Weed Chipper, Australian Awards for University Teaching Citation 2020, School of Engineering Mid-Career Research Award 2023, and AAEE Award for Engineering Education Research Design 2021 (co-recipient). His innovations contribute to UN Sustainable Development Goals including Zero Hunger, Quality Education, and Climate Action.
