He earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Newcastle and a Bachelor of Science (Honours) from Queen's University Belfast, Ireland. His research focuses on climate risk assessment, tropical cyclones, theoretical, applied and statistical climatology, climate variability and change analysis, climate modelling and seasonal forecasting, natural peril and hazard risk modelling including tropical cyclones, storms and floods, extreme event analysis, development of parametric insurance products, geospatial analysis using Geographical Information Systems and remote sensing, applied climatology, climate adaptation, climate dynamics, ENSO, Indo-Pacific climate variability, insurance, natural disasters, and tropical climatology.
Magee's career includes roles as Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Water, Climate and Land from 2018 to 2022, Conjoint Lecturer in Earth Science in 2018, Associate Lecturer in 2017, and Casual Academic from 2013 to 2017, all at the University of Newcastle. He currently serves as Technical Director for Disaster Risk Reduction and Asia-Pacific Lead at JBA Global Resilience. Previous positions encompass Principal Climate Change Resilience at Rio Tinto Australia from 2022 to 2024, Natural Perils Consultant at Finity Consulting Australia in 2018, member of the Australian Government’s Climate Resilient Communities Climate Change and DRR Expert Panel, Pacific climate science expert panel member for the Australia-Pacific Climate Partnership, and consultant for the Asian Development Bank on climate resilient infrastructure and health systems. His awards include the Allianz Climate Risk Research Award in 2020, Faculty of Science Early Career Researcher Excellence Award in 2020, CSIRO Climate Adaptation Flagship Scholar in 2013, Australian Climate and Water Summer Institute in 2017, CSIRO Top-Up Scholarship in 2013, University of Newcastle Research Scholarship Central in 2013, and University of Newcastle International Postgraduate Research Scholarship in 2013. Key publications feature 'A decision tree approach to identify tropical cyclone track characteristics that cause extreme rainfall for the Fiji Islands' (2021), 'Island-nation scale tropical cyclone forecasts for the southwest Pacific region' (2020), 'TCO-SP: A new island-scale tropical cyclone outlook for Southwest Pacific nations and territories' (2020), 'Classifying southwest Pacific Tropical Cyclone Tracks by their Orientation and Shape' (2020), 'Decadal variability of tropical cyclogenesis and decay in the southwest Pacific' (2019), 'On the relationship between Indian Ocean Sea Surface Temperatures and Tropical Cyclogenesis in the Southwest Pacific' (2018), and contributions to state of the climate reports. Magee developed the TCO-SP and related outlooks, enhancing climate services and disaster risk management in the Asia-Pacific.
