About Andrew

Andrew Milat is Adjunct Associate Professor in the Sydney School of Public Health within the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. He earned his PhD, Master of Public Health with Honours, and Bachelor of Health and Medical Science Education with Honours. His academic interests centre on public health implementation science, particularly the scaling up of effective interventions, research impact assessment, and evidence synthesis for policy and practice. Milat's career spans more than two decades in public health, where he has directed evidence generation and evaluation efforts at the NSW Ministry of Health and now serves as Executive Director of the Intelligence and Support for Innovation, Transformation and Evaluation (InSITE) unit at the NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation. He holds ongoing affiliations with the University of Sydney's Prevention Research Collaboration and acts as a senior adviser to Sydney Health Partners.

Milat has made significant contributions to the field through extensive research outputs, including over 165 peer-reviewed journal articles. Notable publications include "Narrative review of models and success factors for scaling up public health interventions: applications to obesity prevention" published in 2015 in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, "Evidence on scaling in health and social care: an umbrella review" in the Milbank Quarterly in 2023, and "Intervention Scalability Assessment Tool: a decision support resource for health policy makers" in Health Research Policy and Systems in 2020. His scholarship has achieved more than 6,500 citations, placing him among the top 0.1% of researchers worldwide in program evaluation. Additionally, he contributes to advancing prevention science as a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Prevention Centre, hosted by the Sax Institute and the University of Sydney. Through these roles and his leadership in translating research into scalable health innovations, Milat has influenced public health policy and practice in Australia.
