Andrew Walter is Professor of International Relations in the School of Social and Political Sciences, Faculty of Arts, at the University of Melbourne, where he also serves as Political Science Discipline Co-Chair and Interim Director of the Melbourne School of Government. He holds a BA (Hons) in Economics and Political Science from the University of Western Australia, an MPhil in International Relations from the University of Oxford (1983-1985), and a DPhil in International Relations from the University of Oxford (1988). His academic career includes positions as Reader in International Political Economy at the London School of Economics, where he directed the MSc International Political Economy programme, University Lecturer in International Relations and Fellow at St Antony's College, Oxford until 1997, and visiting professorships at the University of Melbourne, Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies in Singapore, University of British Columbia, International University of Japan, and Pacific Council on International Policy at the University of Southern California.
Walter specializes in the political economy of international finance and global financial governance. His research examines governance of international money and finance among and within countries, implications of the end of the Cold War for global economic order, geopolitical dynamics in East Asia including US-China relations, and the politics of financial crises and government bailouts influenced by middle-class wealth expectations. Key publications include The Wealth Effect: How the Great Expectations of the Middle Class Have Changed the Politics of Banking Crises (2019, co-authored with Jeffrey M. Chwieroth, Cambridge University Press), which received the Stein Rokkan Prize in the Social Sciences (2021) and the International Studies Association’s Best Book in International Political Economy Prize (2021); Governing Finance: East Asia's Adoption of International Standards (2008, Cornell University Press); Analyzing the Global Political Economy (2009, co-authored with Gautam Sen, Princeton University Press); Regionalism, Globalization, and World Economic Order (2001, Cambridge University Press); and China, the United States, and Global Order (2011, co-authored with Rosemary Foot, Cambridge University Press). He was awarded a Fulbright Senior Scholar Award in 2021.
