About Andrey

Dr Andrey Alenin is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering and Technology at UNSW Canberra, University of New South Wales. He holds key administrative roles as Electrical Engineering Program Coordinator and Final Year Undergraduate Engineering Project Coordinator within the school. Additionally, he contributes to the UNSW Canberra Space initiative, particularly in space situational awareness research. Alenin earned his Bachelor of Science in 2009 and PhD in Optical Sciences in 2015 from the Wyant College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona, completing his doctoral work under the supervision of J. Scott Tyo.

His research focuses on optics and polarimetry, specializing in Mueller matrix polarimeters, channeled spectropolarimetry, and linear systems in optics, with further interests in optical design, optimization, and applied machine learning. A major contribution to the field is his co-authorship of the book Field Guide to Linear Systems in Optics (SPIE Press, 2015), where he authored numerous chapters on topics including Fourier transforms, diffraction, sampling, convolution theorems, and polarization-specific phenomena such as channeled spectropolarimetry. His extensive publication record includes recent articles like "Multi-harmonic reconstruction of photoelastic modulator-based Mueller polarimeters using the complex Q-matrix" (Applied Optics, 2023), "Scene-adaptive spatially channeled imaging Mueller polarimeter" (Optics Express, 2023), "User Study Comparing Linearity and Orthogonalization for Polarimetric Visualizations" (IEEE Access, 2022), and works in Optics Letters and Journal of the Optical Society of America A on spatiotemporal polarimeters and polarization visualization. With over 650 citations, Alenin's research has significantly influenced advancements in polarimetric imaging, remote sensing, and optical engineering applications.
