About Andy

Andy Quilty is a Lecturer in Fine Arts at the University of Western Australia Design School's Discipline of Fine Arts. He is also an accomplished multidisciplinary artist and independent arts worker, facilitating creative development workshops throughout Western Australia in schools, Aboriginal art centres, community organisations, not-for-profits, and prisons. Quilty's artistic practice centers on identifying a creative visual language located in outer suburbia, incorporating material and psychological expressions, markings, and gestures as inventive articulations of outer suburban experience. His academic qualifications comprise a Master of Fine Arts by Research from UWA awarded on 9 August 2024 for the thesis 'Bogans, blow-ins and burnouts: the outer suburbs in Australian art', a Diploma of Graphic Design from North Metropolitan TAFE awarded on 14 December 2007, and a Bachelor of Arts (Art) from Curtin University awarded on 5 September 2003.

Quilty has an extensive record of 31 research outputs, primarily consisting of digital or visual products (24), exhibitions (3), and other contributions. Key recent works include the exhibition 'Happy Meals and Scooter Skids: Art from the outer suburbs' (2025), 'South West Biennial 2026: Tracework' (2026), the series 'Migrant (Willeton), Middle class (Joondalup), Infant (Kwinanna), Retired (Mandurah), Working class (Rockingham), Squatter (West Perth), Yuppie (Claremont), Student (Nedlands), Activist (Fremantle)' (2025), and 'Bread of Bone' (2023). He has earned ten prizes and awards, notably the Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning in the UWA School of Design Excellence in Teaching Awards (2022), Vasse Art Award (2018), Hazelhurst Works on Paper - Artist Residency Prize (2017), Award for Excellence - Joondalup Invitation Art Prize (2016), and Wanneroo Art Award (2016). Additionally, Quilty is a member of the Cultural Development and Arts Advisory Committee for the City of Rockingham since March 2021 and Program Patron for Military Art Program Australia since 2015. He has delivered five public lectures, debates, or seminars, and contributes to artist mentoring and residencies including at Warmun Art Centre (2024 onwards) and Gija Artists Residency at UWA School of Design (September 2025).
