Ani Ngawhika serves as Kaitohutohu Pāpāho Māori, or Communications Advisor (Māori), at the University of Otago in Dunedin. She is part of the Communications Services team under External Engagement, focusing on Māori communications in internal channels and external advisory. Her role supports the promotion of te reo Māori and Māori perspectives within university activities.
An alumnus of the University of Otago, Ani Ngawhika previously worked as a reporter for the Otago Daily Times, producing key articles such as 'University appoints its first deputy vice-chancellor Māori' (2024), 'University welcomes psychology professor' profiling Professor Siautu Alefaio (2024), 'Otago Prof recognised in UK for decolonising NZ legal sector' (2024), 'Home island front of graduate's mind: 20-year-old given $500K for research' (2024), 'Graduation a ‘surreal’ experience after years of study' (2024), and 'Association between tomboys, trauma, study finds' (2024). She also authored the opinion piece 'buzz now anxiety, not excitement' (2026) and 'Keeping kaumatua moving' on initiatives for older Māori. Of Kāi Tahu, Kāti Māmoe, Te Arawa iwi, Ngawhika delivered kōrero at the University of Otago's inaugural event recognizing champions of te reo in Wānaka in April 2026. Her contributions span journalism and university communications, enhancing visibility of academic achievements and Māori cultural elements.
