Anna Barwick served as a Senior Lecturer in Pharmacy Practice in the School of Rural Medicine at the University of New England from 2012 until recently. She earned her Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours from Charles Sturt University and holds a Master of Clinical Pharmacy. Beginning her career in community pharmacy, she transitioned to hospital pharmacy in Armidale and consultancy roles conducting home medication reviews and aged care services. At UNE, she taught pharmacy practice units across first, third, and fourth-year levels, as well as in medicine and nursing programs. Barwick is the founder and director of PharmOnline, Australia’s pioneering pharmacist-led telehealth service launched in response to the COVID-19 crisis, offering 24/7 remote consultations to improve access to pharmaceutical advice, especially in rural areas.
Barwick’s research interests encompass pharmacy practice, telehealth, women’s health, medical termination of pregnancy, deprescribing, and N-of-1 single subject studies. She is pursuing a PhD part-time at the University of Queensland, focusing on rationalising medicines through N-of-1 trials. Notable publications include "Congenital and Fetal Effects After Mifepristone Exposure and Continuation of Pregnancy: A Systematic Review" (2024, Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics), "Progesterone after mifepristone: A pilot prospective single arm clinical trial for women who have changed their mind after commencing medical abortion" (2023), "Psychometric (Rasch) testing of a professional identity scale for pharmacy students" (2023), "A vision to advance gender equality within pharmacy leadership: Next steps to take the profession forward" (2023), and "Professional identity and empathy in undergraduate pharmacy students" (2019). Her contributions have been recognized with the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in the 2025 Australia Day Honours for service to pharmacy and rural health, the 2022 NSW Premier’s Woman of the Year award, UNE’s Superstar of STEM in 2022, NSW Pharmacist of the Year in 2021, and the Future Women NSW Rural Scholarship in 2021. A credentialed asthma educator and accredited for Home Medication Reviews, Barwick has significantly influenced modernizing pharmacy practice and enhancing health outcomes in regional Australia.
