Professor Anna Chapman is a Professor at Melbourne Law School, University of Melbourne. She holds Bachelor degrees in Commerce and Law (with Honours) from the University of Melbourne, an LLM from the University of Melbourne, and a PhD from the University of Adelaide awarded with a Dean's Commendation for Doctoral Thesis Excellence. Chapman joined the Law School following a period of legal practice. She has held several key leadership positions, including previous Associate Dean (JD) of the Law School, past Co-Director of the Centre for Employment and Labour Relations Law, and past Editor of the Australian Journal of Labour Law. Currently, she serves on the Editorial Committee of the Australian Journal of Labour Law and is a member of the Australian Labour Law Association. She has successfully obtained eight competitive research grants, including five from the Australian Research Council. Chapman teaches Employment Law in the Melbourne JD program.
Her research specializations centre on inequality and discrimination in work relations, including the National Employment Standards, General Protections (Adverse Action), unfair dismissal law, and anti-discrimination law. Chapman has authored over 80 scholarly publications, comprising more than 25 refereed journal articles, 10 book chapters, and a co-edited book. Notable works include 'The Evolving Project of Labour Law: Foundations, Development and Future Research Directions' co-edited with John Howe and Ingrid Landau (2017), 'Defining Sexual Harassment: A History of the Commonwealth Legislation and its Critiques' with Gail Mason, 'Work-and-Care Initiatives: Flaws in the Australian Regulatory Framework', 'The Reverse Onus of Proof Then and Now: The Barclay Case and the History of the Fair Work Act's Union Victimisation and Freedom of Association Provisions', and 'Part 3-1, Adverse Action and Equality'. Her publications appear in leading national and international peer-reviewed journals. A 2012 study by R. Smyth ranked her 20th in 'Most Prolific Publishers in the Go8 University Law Reviews (Excluding Home Review)' and 21st in 'Overall Most Prolific Publishers in Leading Australian Law Journals (Excluding Home Review)'. This body of work underscores her significant influence in the field of labour law.
